Solar Panels
Solar panels are the primary means by which we currently harness energy from the sun. They can be installed nearly anywhere and depending on the number of panels can often generate enough electricity for most homes and small businesses. They electricity they create is completely free and has no adverse effects on the environment.
Solar panels are made from groups of solar cells. These cells are most often made from crystalline silicon, which act as a semi-conductor. As sunlight contacts the silicon cells it knocks loose the electrons contained within, which are then forced to flow in one direction, thereby creating electricity.
Solar panels are no longer confined to large, bulky configurations. Technology has advanced enough to allow for the creation of much smaller panels that can be used for everything from charging your cell phone to powering the air conditioning unit in your car. Future applications for photovoltaics are really limited only by our imagination.
