Home Wind Turbine

Home wind turbines can be an excellent source of free, clean electricity. In areas that receive a regular, steady wind, many of these turbines can provide enough energy to power an average home without the need for a connection to a community grid. However, in most cases they are used to augment electricity use, not replace it.

A home wind turbine works by converting the kinetic energy of the wind into usable electricity. As the wind turns the blades, they in turn spin a shaft inside a generator which is what creates the needed electricity. This electricity can then be either used directly, or stored for future use.

A home wind turbine can normally be found in one of two configurations; either a vertical axis or horizontal axis design. For the most part, horizontal axis turbines are more effective, but they often require very tall towers in order to make adequate use of the available wind. Vertical axis turbines don’t need to be positioned as high up, but they are less effective.
